The very first step in the surgical path is attending a live seminar or completing the online webinar. This will give you an overview of the weight loss surgery journey and your many options. Seminar will also introduce you to our surgeons and prepare you for your next steps.
Once you have completed the required seminar, our office will help to verify that you have bariatric coverage through your insurance policy or provide you with information on your self-pay options. Through insurance, we are simply verifying with your policy has the benefit for bariatric surgery. We urge you to do the same. Please remember, having the benefit is NOT an approval for surgery. This only confirms you do have weight loss surgery benefits as part of your insurance policy. We will work with you to review your individual situation and discuss what unique requirements your policy may have.
Your first appointment with our office is your Initial Consultation. During the initial consultation, you will be meeting several members of your care team. Along with your surgeon and their medical assistants, you will meet with your Case Manager who will help you understand the work up process and walk you through your paperwork. We will schedule your Nutrition Consultation at this time as well as many other required preoperative tests.
With your surgeon, you will discuss your options and have an opportunity to ask questions. We hope to provide you with all the necessary information to make the best decision for you.
Please remember, this is not a typical doctor’s appointment. This is a lengthy visit. Please expect to be in our office up to three hours. The preoperative workup for bariatric surgery is a process, not just a pit stop along the journey. By gathering as much information as we can the first time you enter our doors, we are able to help you on the path to surgery in a more timely and efficient manner.

Every insurance company has its own criteria needed for bariatric surgery. Our staff will work with your insurance company on your behalf to ensure all the required information is submitted to expedite the approval process. In order for us to submit your information to the insurance company for approval, your case manager must receive the results from your lab work, psychological evaluation, nutrition evaluation, various other require preoperative tests, and any weight history required by your individual insurance company. It is the responsibility of the patient to attend all scheduled preoperative appointments.
We assure you we will do our very best to get this done as efficiently as possible for each patient. Please also keep in mind, our office may not receive your results or immediately after your specialist visit. This can take some time to be processed. Your health, safety, and mental readiness are the top priorities in preparing your for this exciting life change, so we ask you to please be patient and know we are always working towards making your goals become realities.
If you chose to pursue bariatric surgery outside the constraints of your insurance coverage, we encourage you to research our self-funded program.
Once your various preoperative tests have been completed, a Results Visit will be scheduled to give you and your surgeon a chance to finalize your choices and make sure you are surgery ready.
At this visit you will meet with your surgery scheduler and discuss what your options are for surgery dates. Please have your calendar in mind prior to this appointment and keep in mind your schedule for recovery and plans that may factor into this decision. It is also important to keep in mind, our surgeons have set operating schedules that may not allow for full flexibility with specific day or time requests.
Your surgery estimate must be paid in full in at this time in order to schedule surgery.
