Success Stories

For a number of years different doctors had asked me to think about having weight loss surgery.  I generally discounted it for a number of reasons.  I had a sister-in-law that had regained her weight plus more and here health was in worse shape than before.  But mostly because I always felt I could just do it on my own if I put my mind to it.  What did it for me was a fall.  My husband had died the year before and I had gotten a dog for company and the exercise.  One morning before work I had taken him out and walked down the driveway to get the newspaper, and my leg gave out on me.  Down I went.  With my weight and bad knees I had no idea how I was going to get myself up.  It was early morning and no one was around for help.  After lying there for a bit, I was able to work myself over to the grass and struggle to my feet. I was bruised, but nothing was sprained or broken.  And all I could think about was “what if”.  That’s when I decided I needed to do something for myself and the first thing I decided to do was to have surgery.  That was long road, 6 months or so to get through the insurance process and now I am two years out from surgery.  There have been many positive moments along with some frustrations.  Pluses include getting off a lot of the medications I was taking.  The diabetes and cholesterol are resolved and my blood pressure is good enough to take now just take a low dose medication.  That will more than likely go away when I lose more weight.  I am always surprised to catch my reflection somewhere- who is that person?  I still think of myself as a large person and am working with a therapist to overcome that as well as poor body image that comes from having excess weight. Actually, shopping and finding closes that fit right is a big plus!- CB*

I am eternally grateful to Dr. Bovard, his staff, and the entire team at Bariatric Surgeons of North Carolina. From the first minute, and continuing every minute since, they have been absolutely wonderful to me, always ready to help me with whatever I needed, full of great information and advice that has helped get me to where I am, and just the absolute best bunch of people I have ever met. Since I started going through my experience, I have talked to many people that I know in my life who are struggling with the same weight issues I was, and I have learned a lot about this in the past year, to the point where I’ve become somewhat of a source of information about it, and a very outspoken and passionate advocate for bariatric surgery. —AB*

Two years ago I was 220 lbs.  I was considered morbidly obese.  My health was very poor.  I could not control my blood pressure and my family doctor told me I had to lose weight.  I knew I had to do something or I was going to have a stroke.  I was already using a cane, walker, or scooter to be mobile.    For two years my doctor stayed on me about my weight.  One day I asked him why I had a fatty liver and his response was, “You are fat and you are fat all over.”  Needless to say this hurt me, but it made me realize that something had to be done.   He sent me to a Bariatric Specialist in Cary.  There I met some of the most caring, compassionate people, Dr. Paul Enochs and his staff. I had to start a six-month weight loss program.  This was coordinated with my family doctor and Dr. Enochs’ office.  I did not have to worry about scheduling any tests, etc., Dr. Enochs’ office took care of everything. On February 3, 2014, I had the Roux-en-Y procedure.    I won’t tell you it was easy because it was the hardest work I have done.  Dr. Enochs’ staff was always there for me and I lived an hour away from his office.  Every day his staff called me, and I did have some problems, but with time and closely working with Dr. Enochs’ staff, I soon began losing weight.    At my yearly checkup in February 2015, I had lost 98 lbs.  I am 67 years old and I now weigh 122 lbs. If you need to lose weight because of poor health, don’t wait another day.  Go to see Dr. Enochs.  I have more energy than when I got married 52 years ago.  I no longer use a walker or scooter.  Because of RA and fibromyalgia, I still use a cane some days (usually a rainy or very cold day).  But for the most part, I can’t say THANK YOU enough to Dr. Enochs and his staff.  They literally gave me back my life. —L.R.*

Dr Bovard is the best. He is personable, down to earth and very quick on his feet. I had my surgery august 2015 without a hiccup. I wonder why it took me so long to make that move. I’m sure all the doctors are nice but I absolutely love Dr. Bovard! —A.G. *

I had always been somewhat over weight growing up. Then I had two kids and my weight just kept coming on and I never in my wildest dreams thought it would get out of control like it had. At my highest weight of 406 lbs I started looking into weight loss surgery. I was researching doctors and everybody I came across said go talk to Dr. Paul Enochs.  Once I got my insurance together I did just that. I must say he was so down to earth would sit and listen to my concerns and answer all my questions and would never act like he needed to leave the room even though he had a lot of patients waiting on him. I had the SIPS procedure on Sept 5, 2014 and in less then three months I have lost 70 lbs.  I can walk now with out giving out, my blood pressure has came down and I sleep better at night. I can’t wait to be at my ideal weight so I can do things with my family and not just watch them from the sidelines. Thank You Dr. Enochs! You helped save me and there is no way of paying you back but only saying thank you from the bottom of my heart.  —Patricia J*

Dr. Pilati was fantastic. Very understanding. Worked my surgery in a day early when my gallbladder decided it needed to come out sooner than expected. Thank you!! —M. T.*

My eating and my life have completely changed, and I LOVE my new life. I used to eat 3 huge meals a day, cutting off my metabolism and defeating myself. Now I eat 3 meals and 2 snacks every day, like clockwork, and it’s so natural that I can’t imagine how I lived any other way. I still eat pizza on occasion, but instead of an entire pizza being a meal, I’m lucky to get through one slice. My cravings for fast food are gone–I haven’t set foot in one since before my surgery. Likewise, the sugar drinks and soda that I used to drink are gone–water is the only thing I drink anymore. I feel absolutely blessed and lucky to be where I am now, and now that I have the control of myself back, I never want to give it up again. I have been posting on Facebook about my journey since I started the whole process, and after my one-year follow-up, I posted a summary, and the comment I ended with was this: “A lot of doctors can claim that they’ve saved lives, in one way or another. However, how many can claim that not only can they SAVE a life, but also IMPROVE it? That’s what makes Dr. Bovard–and others like him–so special. He saved my life, in every way that it could be saved, and helped me get to a point that I never imagined that I’d ever see–me, healthy and happy again. —A.B.*

Four years ago, I was 230 lbs. Thanks to Dr. Bruce, I am now 130 lbs. and have been there for the last 2 years. I am so thankful to Dr. Bruce for saving my life. I had gotten to the point I could not walk to the mailbox without giving out of breath. I now work out 2-3 days a week at the gym!! Thanks, Dr. Bruce, you are the best. –A. L.*

I cannot believe how incredible my experience with Dr. Enochs was. He was so caring and patient in the office (which totally won me over) but as a surgeon he was hands down the best. I have had 4 c sections, my ovary removed and a couple other surgeries and none of them went as smooth as my gastric bypass. He is so gentle I was never in any pain. I will never go to any other surgeon again! —Amy T.*

In July of 2010, my weight reached an all time high of 335 lbs. Newly married and looking forward to starting the next phase of my life, I knew that I had reached a point where I needed help taking my life back. I attended a Weight Loss Seminar one evening after work and listened to all of the different options. Dr. Tyner lead the Seminar that night and I knew from the moment he started talking that I wanted him as my surgeon. I scheduled my first consultation and met Dona, my Case Manager. From the first meeting, I knew that I was working with a superior team. Dona was with me every step of the way, even when I got frustrated and wanted to give up. Dr. Tyner was very patient and always gave me his honest opinion about my numerous questions relating to Weight Loss Surgery. Dr. Tyner and his dedicated team changed my life.I also want to thank Dr. Tyner and his team so very much for their support and guidance throughout this entire process. I simply could not have done it without them! This surgery has changed my life forever and it is with a humble heart that I thank Dr. Tyner and Dona for their dedication and desire to help people change their lives through weight loss surgery. —L.D.*

I had lap band surgery on January 10, 2013. My starting weight was 215. Through the advice of Dr. Bruce, Sarah Sout and my nutritionist, I have been able to reach my goal weight WITHOUT having an adjustment to my band. I am currently at 136 and cannot remember the last time I felt so good. Many thanks to Dr. Bruce and his team for giving me my life back! —Monica J.*

I could not be more pleased with my surgeon. He made me feel very comfortable and at ease. I know I asked a lot of questions and he always took the time to answer each one and made me feel as if I was his only patient even though the waiting room was full of others in my similar situation. I had to have my gall bladder removed rather unexpectantly and Dr. Enochs preformed the surgery for me. I can not speak highly enough about my doctor. I researched all of the doctors in my area and I made a great choice. —Erin G.*

Dr. Tyner performed my gastric bypass on December 6, 2012. I weighed 317 lbs before I met Dr. Tyner. I now weigh 213 lbs. I feel so much better. I am off diabetic medication and blood pressure medication. I no longer have a problem with asthma. My whole life has literally changed. –Bonita R.*

As someone who has been overweight since she was a toddler, going to the doctor was a nightmare for me. In fact, by the time I made it to Dr. Bruce’s seminar, it had been 8 years since I had willingly seen a doctor. You can imagine that for me, making the decision to have bariatric surgery was an enormous decision that was not taking lightly. It involved having an enormous amount of trust in the person performing the surgery. I had never been in the hospital as a patient, let alone for a surgery. The most appealing thing for me about Dr. Bruce is that you really get the idea from the way he speaks about his patients and the surgeries he has performed that not only is he excellent on his side of the hospital bed, but that he understands what its likes to be on his patients side of the bed as well. There are lots of competent doctors out there, but it took years for me to find someone who had that perfect combination of excellence and empathy. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Dr. Bruce, his surgical tem at Rex and everyone at Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina. They have made going to the doctor for me something I look forward to, rather than something I dread. —V.S.*

Dr. Paul Enochs has literally changed my life! He has been invaluable in helping me decide which surgery would be best for me. He has always been there, answering any question I had (I had a lot), never making me feel rushed, and just has a wonderful way about him. I highly recommend him, his greatest experience is with the RNY, then the Band, and he also does the DS. Besides his great bedside manner, even better is how good of a surgeon he is. The single greatest thing I like about him is that on the RNY, he doesn’t do a single staple line to re-secure your stoma, he doesn’t do a double staple line, he does a triple! AND, he does not just do additional sewing, but EXTRA sewing in addition to the staples, to make sure there are no leaks. My surgery went fantastic, virtually no pain afterwards (except when the nurse pulled out my drain), and he CARES about you after your surgery, follow up appointments are important, and the office makes sure you are there for your multiple follow-up appointments…. I highly recommend Dr. Enochs if you are considering gastric bypass surgery or the Band. —Rick R.*

My first impression of Dr. Enochs was that he was such a mild-tempered person. He seems very caring, gentle and patient. My impression has not changed of him. His staff was quite friendly, full of smiles. Future patients should know that you will feel comfortable in his doctor’s office and during the information session. Definitely surgical competence is first, and bedside manner is 2nd; when you have both, it is great!! —Tamu S.*

Dr Bruce is an amazing person and the most gifted knowledgeable surgeon I know. He and his staff saved my life with Bariatric surgery and continue to provide compassionate care for me and all their patients. You owe it to yourself to be healthy! I’m down over 135 pounds from my heaviest weight. —Tim B.*

Dr. Enochs was GREAT. He made me feel very comfortable. He seems to Care about is patients. He never made me feel humiliated about the way I was. It’s been a year since my surgery and I have had NO problems. If you are considering surgery in NC I would strongly recommend Dr. Enochs. —Janie P.*

I am a 32 year old mother of two and I have been struggling with my weight for a very long time. I was recently at my highest weight of 266lbs when I made the decision to undergo VSG with Dr. Bovard. I tried the diet pills, working out, and eating right, but for some reason the weight never went anywhere. I found out that I was anemic, had gall stones and a hernia, all this I had no clue I was dealing with prior to the surgery. Finally I said the hell with it and took the road to the losers bench. Here I am, a year later, 156lbs and loving it!!! My family and friends have been supportive, which has only made this journey all worth while. After having the surgery I can honestly say that I feel great! I have so much more energy now!! The day I was able to cross my legs I knew I was doing something right. I love going shopping for the things that I knew I would never wear pre surgery like cute tight tops and even skirts, which I never was a fan of. I rarely have to try on certain clothes because I know they will fit. At 5ft 5in I went from a size 18 bottom to a size 7/8, size 2xl-3xl tops to s/m tops. My feet even shrunk 1/2 a size!!!! I take my dietary supplements regularly which is very important along with getting the necessary protein intake.  Sweets, candies, and sodas are a thing of the past and I’ll never look back! —A.L.*

Dr. Enochs is the best surgeon and one of most compassionate people that I have ever met. He answered all of my questions and made me feel confident that I had reached the correct decision. He discussed the risks involved with this surgery or any other surgery on a MO patient. He has an excellent aftercare program. —Pam S.*

I know that this will sound fake because this is so positive, but this is the truth. Dr. Enochs and his entire staff are complete Godsends. They are by far the absolute BEST in the world! They helped me through the entire process from the first visit through my surgery with great care and compassion. I always received a call back with 2-24 hours on any and every question. After my initial consultation I was a little worried about having to track down my medical records from previous doctors on my own. Because this type of thing has always been handled by my doctor’s offices, it was an entirely foreign and scary task to me, but it was not anywhere near as overwhelming as I thought it would be. In the end, it was such a small task to do and I have no complaints. I read that Dr. Enochs was the best in NC and chose to drive from Charlotte to Raleigh just for him and I can only say it was EXTREMELY worth it. He and the staff are AMAZING!!! —Sid H.*
