Paul E. Enochs, M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. Paul Enochs started the Triangle's first and only private weight loss surgery center nearly a decade ago. He has performed Raleigh's first gastric bypass and Lap Band procedure and to date has done more bariatric procedures in the Triangle area than any other bariatric surgeon. Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina is also the only practice to perform the Single Incision Lap Band procedure (SILS). He is the founder of the weight loss surgery centers and is presently the Medical Director for Bariatrics at Wake Med Cary Hospital and formerly at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Dr. Enochs received his medical degree from the University of South Alabama College Of Medicine. He completed his surgery residency at the University of South Alabama Medical Center where his primary focus and specialization was advanced laparoscopy and bariatric surgery. He received additional fellowship training in bariatric surgery and advanced laparoscopy at the University of California - San Francisco, the Carolinas Medical Center, the Medical College of Virginia, and the Duke University Medical Center. He resides in Raleigh with his wife and two beautiful kids.

Michael A. Tyner, M.D., F.A.C.S

Dr. Michael Tyner graduated with honors from Wake Forest University in 1979 with and undergraduate degree in Biology. He completed medical school and his general surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Dr. Tyner began his professional career in 1989 in Easley, South Carolina and soon joined Pinehurst Surgical Clinic practice. In 2003 he founded Cary Surgical Specialists focusing on providing general surgery care to Cary and the surrounding communities. In 2007 Cary Surgical Specialists merged with Bariatric Specialists of North Carolina to become the practice of Drs. Tyner, Bruce and Enochs.

Dr. Tyner has long been a champion of adapting laparoscopic surgical techniques to traditional open surgical procedures. Through involvement in regional, national and specialty conferences, he has become skilled in advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques in management of diseases of the gallbladder, bile duct, colon, small bowel and in repair of abdominal wall hernias.

A special interest of Dr. Tyner’s has been developing improved techniques to repair hiatal hernias and surgically treat gastroesophageal reflux diseases (GERD). He was a guest lecturer on this topic at the 2003 American College of Surgeons meeting.

It was with this broad based knowledge and experience with laparoscopic techniques that he developed a mentoring and assisting role while performing bariatric surgery in 2003. Dr. Tyner is a member of the American Metabolic and Bariatric Society and stays current in this specialty by attendance at leading-edge surgery conferences.

Dr. Tyner resides in Raleigh with his wife and his son and a parrot. His daughter attends college and resides out of town. When Dr. Tyner isn’t spending quality time with his family, you may find him running, skiing or golfing. In addition to his nuclear family, Dr Tyner spends time with his love of medicine in South America. He spearheaded an ongoing mentoring relationship with the National Children's Hospital in El Salvador introducing laparoscopy thereby reducing pain and scaring on the kids.

Jon-Michael Bruce, M.D., F.A.C.S  F.A.S.M.B.S.

Dr. Bruce's practice is dedicated to result-oriented weight loss surgery and respecting the individual. His philosophy is based on empowering the patient to achieve a healthy, balanced and sustained weight loss experience. He also believes that thorough preoperative evaluation and excellent aftercare, and respecting the intelligence and integrity of each patient, is integral in achieving these goals. He has a hands-on one-on-one approach with his patients, tailoring the procedure and aftercare to meet his patients' needs. He regularly performs laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic gastric bypass, and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and is currently evaluating new procedures and methods for weight loss. By offering a range of procedures, he can ensure that the patient has the opportunity to review and select which procedure would be the best for them. He has bariatric surgical privileges at Rex and Wake Med Hospitals. Both of these facilities have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in caring for patients. He is dedicated to the advancement of bariatrics and educating the community on the options for the treatment of obesity.

Dr. Bruce hails from the Western New York region. Though he was raised on a farm, he wanted to become a doctor by the age of seven. His childhood heroes included his mother, his grandmother, and Hawkeye Pierce, all of whom fueled his passion for medicine. He completed a dual degree program at Niagara University in 1989, graduating Summa Cum Laude and second in his class. He also was heavily involved in ROTC, serving as Battalion Commander his senior year, and won both the George Catlett Marshall Award and top cadet in the region. He earned his commission in 1989 but delayed service to complete medical school and surgical residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo. During this time he won several awards including the Siegel award as the University's best resident teacher, overall best chief resident, and served as the administrative chief resident his final year.

Upon finishing residency Dr. Bruce entered active duty in the US Army. He was accompanied by his family and served initially at the US Army Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany for three years. While stationed there he was also assigned to the 212th MASH, the last MASH in the US Army, fulfilling the second of his childhood dreams (becoming a doctor being the first). Combat time deployments included two tours in the Balkans during which he served as a field trauma surgeon. Upon completion of his tour in Heidelberg, he returned to the States to finish his military service at Fort Hood, Texas, and was Honorably discharged. He regards his military service an extremely rewarding personal and professional experience, and continues to demonstrate support through the USO.

Dr. Bruce resides in North Carolina with his wife and four children. He enjoys football, rock and roll, and spending time with his family and friends. Despite the accolades he has received over time, Dr. Bruce acknowledges the past and continued superb support that he receives from his co-workers and partners. The results of one are dependent on the actions of many. He credits his wife and her endless patience as the "wind beneath his wings", and God for the ability to practice, the opportunity to achieve, and the humility to recognize his limitations.
