Handy Kitchen Tools

A kitchen with the right gadgets and gizmos can make cooking easy and fun!  Here is a list of some suggested tools to have around the house…

Blender– puree foods, make bread crumbs, blend beverages, sauces, and salad dressings.

Colander– drain fat from meats, water from pasta

Fat-Off Ladle– skim fat from meat stocks, soups, and stews

Food Processor– chop, slice, shred, grind, puree, and mix foods quickly & easily

Grater– useful for small jobs like shredding cheese or grating citrus peels

Gravy Strainer/Fat-Separating Cup– since fat rises to the top, the low-fat liquid can be poured from the bottom

Hot-Air Popper– pop kernals without added fat

Kitchen Shears– trim excess fat from meats & poultry

Meat Thermometer– prevents overcooking of lean meats

Nonstick Baking Pans, Baking Sheets, Muffin Pans– bake without adding grease or fat to the pans

Pasta Portioner– ensures correct yield for recipes

Pressure Cooker– reduces cooking time by one-half to one-third for foods that require moisture-heat cooking

Scales– helps with portion control (look for one with measurement in ounces)

Spoons– wooden & plastic for use in nonstick pans

Steam Basket or Steamer– cook food without added fat and  reduce nutrient loss

Wire Grilling Basket– prevents tender fish and vegetables from breaking & falling through the grill rack

Wok-allows for even distribution of heat, quick cooking time, and uses little oil
